He processed his experiences aboard a German submarine in World War II by writing ''Das Boot'' which was made into a movie that enjoys cult status today. His collection of German expressionist prints can be admired at the Museum der Phantasie in Bernried, Germany.
Buchheim was also a prolific artist during the 1960s and created many witty posters and art prints which were published by his eponymous publishing house, the ''Buchheim Verlag''.
